Against setting up of sponge iron factory

PALAKKAD: A meeting of the CPI(M), convened by party district secretary P. Unni at the district committee office here on Monday, decided not to allow the setting up of a sponge iron factory at Manthuruthy near Malampuzha.

N.N. Krishnadas, M.P, briefed the party meeting about the environment problems and the possible dangers of setting up a huge sponge iron factory near the Malampuzha reservoir that provides drinking water to the people of Palakkad town and half a dozen adjoining panchayats.

The meeting has decided to launch a signature campaign from April 5 and conduct a fast on April 18 at Fort Maidan to protest against the move to set up the factory. On April 10, a memorandum with 5 lakh signatures will be submitted to the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.

Mr. Unni said the party will seek the support of the social and voluntary organisations to mobilise public opinion against the setting up of the factory.
