Alleges he has hidden interests in Aranmula airport project

Communist Party of India district secretary P. Prasad has alleged that the hidden interests of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy have been exposed through his statement on Thursday that the Cabinet had cleared the Aranmula airport project and that the State would take 10 per equity in the project.

In a statement issued here on Friday, the CPI leader condemned the government decision. The Chennai-based private company had made announcements through the Press in Malaysia and Chennai, earlier, that the Kerala government would be having 10 per cent stake in the proposed private airport project in Aranmula and Mr. Chandy was simply parroting the words uttered by the company, he said.

The CPI leader alleged that the government, by taking 10 per cent equity, was trying to whitewash a series of illegalities and irregularities taken place in the name of the airport project, sidelining the very fact that the entire village was up in arms against the project that would ultimately destroy the Aranmula Puncha (paddy land), wetland and the environment and ecosystem as such.

Eco concerns

He said the government decision came, disregarding the fact that the Assembly Committee on Environment, appointed by the government itself, and the court had expressed serious concern over the environmental implications of the proposed airport project. He alleged that the local MP and MLA had been functioning as agents of the private company.
