N. Velappan, member of the Communist Party of India State council, was killed and two MLAs from the party were injured when the car in which they were travelling met with an accident near Kottamkulangara in Kayamkulam late on Sunday night.

P. Thilothaman, Cherthala MLA, who sustained serious injuries, was rushed to the Government Medical college Hospital, Alappuzha. K. Ajith, Vaikom MLA, and car driver Rajesh were taken to the Kayamkulam taluk hospital and their condition was said to be safe. Mr. Velappan was killed on the spot. As per available information, the accident occurred around 11.15 p.m. when the driver lost control of the car while trying to avoid hitting a two-wheeler on National Highway 47. The car went off the road and fell into a 15-foot-deep trench.
