Files relating to over 3,000 criminal cases destroyed
KOLLAM: The Judicial First Class Magistrate Courts 1 and 11 in the Civil Station complex here were set on fire by unidentified persons around 3 a.m. on Thursday.
Files relating to over 3,000 criminal cases before the court 1 were reduced to ashes. The damage to the adjacent court was not so serious.
The police said the culprit first broke the windowpanes of the court rooms on the western side of the complex by the roadside.
They then filled up the casing of a cricket ball with petrol, tied it to a sari, set fire to the sari and threw it inside the court 1 through the window. Something similar was lit and thrown into the other court.
Summons, warrants, cheques relating to bogus cheque cases and other material evidence and furniture were destroyed. The fire was first seen by a lorry driver who informed the police control room.
Fire and Rescue Service personnel gained entry into the room by breaking open the door. By the time the fire was brought under control, a good amount of files were burnt.
Superintendent of Police K. Sanjay Kumar, other senior police officers and forensic experts from Thiruvanathapuram inspected the site.
The police said that someone interested in the destruction of a file in the custody of the court could be behind the act.
