Alleged abduction of Poothadi grama panchayat vice-president

Court says accused could influence probe

Five accused had moved bail pleas

KALPETTA: District and Sessions Judge Thulasi Bahai on Wednesday dismissed the bail application of the accused Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leaders in the case of alleged abduction of V.N. Saseendran, vice-president of Poothadi grama panchayat.

The bail applications of P.S. Janardhanan, CPI (M) district secretariat member; T.B. Suresh, CPI (M) Pulpally area secretary; T.R. Ravi, area committee member; A.V. Jayan, former Poothadi grama panchayat member; and P.K. Babu, Congress (S) leader; were dismissed by the court on the ground that it might influence the ongoing investigation.

Mr. Saseendran was allegedly kidnapped by a three-member gang from the panchayat office on April 20, a few days before the Left Democratic Front (LDF)-ruled Poothadi grama panchayat was to take up a no-confidence motion against the president.

Mr. Saseendran had joined the Congress recently. But the motion was adjourned for lack of quorum when it was taken up for discussion on April 27.

On the same day, the abductors released him at Koduvally town in Kozhikode district at 7 p.m.

Produced before court

On April 28, the police produced him before the High Court. The accused had been arrested on May 2. This is the second time their bail application has been dismissed by the court.
