: A couple from Aryad, near here, on Thursday lodged a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission charging the South Police with allegedly taking them into custody on Wednesday on the charge of creating public nuisance.

They were allegedly taken into custody from Alappuzha beach on Wednesday evening. The accused, who is a district committee member of the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, told a press conference here on Thursday that the police used abusive language even after they told them that they were married under the Special Marriage Act. He said a complaint would be lodged with the Director General of Police and the Chief Minister.

He alleged that his wife was taken to the station in a police jeep without a woman police personnel. A woman civil police officer at the police station used offensive language against her and asked her derogatory questions. The police charged a case for allegedly causing public nuisance, he said.

He alleged that the police mentally harassed them and they were detained at the station for two hours. He said the police sought to know their caste. However, the police said the couple was released after it was found that they were married. No case had been registered in this regard, they said.
