Probe sought into alleged graft at plant

Thrissur: Opposition councillors of Thrissur Corporation on Tuesday protested against the alleged misappropriation of funds for the waste treatment plant at Laloor.

They staged a sit-in demonstration on the heap of waste at the Laloor trenching ground.

The councillors sought an inquiry into the alleged corruption in the name of the plant. They took out a march from the collectorate. Opposition leader I.P. Paul inaugurated the protest.

The Rs. 5-crore waste treatment plant, sponsored by the Asian Development Bank, has already seen protests from locals and environmentalists.

They alleged that the plant was a threat to life of the residents as well as the environment.

It was estimated that about 157 tonnes of waste is generated in the Corporation limits per day.

Instead of dumping the entire waste in Laloor, the Corporation should take steps to treat it at various locations, the locals demanded.
