KOZHIKODE: A people's convention to highlight the need to protect the wetlands in the city and chalk out measures for their conservation will be held under the aegis of the Kozhikode Kandalkad Thanneerthadaka Samrakshana Ekopana Samithi at the Town Hall here on June 28.

Samithi chairman A. Achyuthan and general convener T. Shobeendran, on Tuesday, appealed to people from all walks of life and political, cultural and literary leaders to participate in the convention. They said the convention was being conducted in the backdrop of wide-scale degradation of mangrove forests in the city, from the Kallayi river in the south to Eranjikkal in the north.

The prime area of the mangrove vegetation, however, was located on either side of the Canoly Canal at Kottooli. The convention would highlight the need to protect the more than 20 species of mangroves which grew in the wetland area. It had also been a habitat for migratory birds for a long time.
