High incidence of child abuse, majority of them within families, was discussed at a seminar organised by the Cyriac Elias Voluntary Association (CEVA) at Ursline Senior Secondary School here on Thursday.

Titled ‘Disha combine – synergising initiative for the future generation,’ the half-day session recommended concerted efforts from the government and non-governmental organisations for ensuring child welfare. Extending community-based counselling centres to all parts of the district, conducting awareness programmes for parents, teachers, and children, and strengthening of the network and quality assurance of service providers were among the recommendations made during the session.

The programme inaugurated by District Collector Rathan Kelkar was attended by members of the Child Welfare Committee, Childline, Juvenile Justice Board, various religious congregations, voluntary organisations, social workers, and doctors.

Four papers were presented on the occasion.

The meeting discussed the erosion of family values leading to exploitation of children by close family members.
