Lawless on road:The bus that ran over a 60-year-old passenger at Elamannoor, near Adoor, on Sunday.

A 60-year-old man was fatally run over by a private bus at Elamannoor, near Adoor, on the Kayamkulam-Punalur State Highway on Sunday morning.

Krishnan of Vattavilayil at Elamannoor was alighting from the bus when it ran over him. The bus was reportedly ‘competing’ with another bus of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation.

The incident led to a tense situation, as a violent mob attacked the bus, took out a few seats, and burnt them on the road. The bus driver and the conductor managed to escape, fearing public wrath.

The attempt to set the bus on fire was foiled by a police party led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy.SP) Anildas.

People allowed the body of the deceased to be moved only after the Dy.SP and Adoor tahsildar S. Vijayakumar assured them that stern measures would be initiated to check speeding of private buses. The Adoor police have registered a case.
