The Kollam District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) on Thursday awarded the first compensation in the State for the dependents of a person killed in an accident by a vehicle that had not been traced. An amendment to the Victims Compensation Act in 2009 had enabled the award of the compensation.

District and Sessions Judge P.D. Rajan, who presided over the DLSA, said Rs. 2,34,500 was awarded as compensation to the dependents of Jayaprakash, 40, who was run over by a vehicle near Paripally in September 2006. Efforts of the Paripally police to trace the vehicle and its driver were in vain. It was in this backdrop that the dependents of Jayaprakash moved the plea. The amount was handed over to Jayaprakash’s wife Sumadevi and two daughters by Mr. Rajan.
