THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: College and university teachers staged a march and a dharna in front of the office of the Accountant General on Wednesday to press for various demands including the appointment of the sixth UGC pay commission and rectification of the anomalies in the recommendations of the fifth pay commission.
The dharna was held as part of the nation-wide agitation called by the All-India Organisation of University and College Teachers (AIFUCTO) to press for these demands.
The teachers also demanded that a central law be introduced to regulate the functioning of private professional colleges in the self-financing sector. Teachers owing allegiance to the All Kerala Private College Teachers’ Association (AKPCTA) and the Association of Kerala Government College Teachers (AKGCT) were among those who took part in the dharna.
The march and dharna was inaugurated in Thiruvananthapuram by the LDF convener Vaikkom Viswan. The AIFUCTO president Thomas Joseph, the AKGCT general secretary J. Prasad, the AKPCTA general secretary R. Mohankumar and the FUTA general secretary A. R. Rajan were among those who addressed the agitating teachers, a press note issued here said.
