KOCHI: The Collector has ordered a high-level inquiry into the alleged harassment of Sree Raman, an elephant owned by the Kochi Devaswom Board.

Animal lovers including the office-bearers of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty against Animals had complained to the authorities that the mahouts had inflicted injuries while controlling the animal, which went wild the other day.

Though two officials from the Forest Department and a veterinary officer inspected the animal on Thursday, they reportedly said that injuries might not have been caused by the use of any weapons for controlling the animal.

Dissatisfied at the manner in which the inspection of the animal was conducted, M.R. Sethumadhavan, secretary of the society, petitioned the Collector, who is also the head of the society.

It was following this complaint that the Collector ordered the inquiry.
