The Joint Christian Council has termed inappropriate Thrissur Collector P.M. Francis's presiding over a youth meeting organised by the Thrissur archdiocese of the Syro-Malabar Church.

The council, in a statement here recently, pointed out that the youth meeting had decided to launch an agitation against the Women's Code Bill proposed by the V.R. Krishna Iyer-headed panel and also adopted a resolution against population control which was a long-standing policy of the State and Central governments. Since the Collector was the symbol and representative of the government in the district, by taking part in such a parochial meeting, the Collector had committed a major impropriety.

The council contended that by participating in meetings of religious organisations, government officers would badly damage secularism and democratic principles. It wanted action against the Collector as he had violated the code of conduct of government officials.

The council criticised the nomination of Archbishop Andrews Thazhath by Union Minister Mukul Vasnik to the committee on social justice under his Ministry. The archbishop was a religious leader and his nomination to such a committee was against secularism, the council said.
