A two-day satyagraha will be staged from Friday at the Town Square here as part of a stir by coir factory employees and small-scale coir factory owners demanding redressal of problems affecting the coir sector.

The employees will observe a token stir on Saturday, while factory owners will shut down their units on Saturday and join the stir.

The employees, who are organising the stir under the banner of CITU, AITUC, BMS, UTUC and TUCI, and owners under the banner of small-scale coir factory owners’ association have put forward demands including a solution to unemployment in the sector, revision of wages in tune with the times and an end to the depot system.

A press note by Joint Agitation Council chairman T.J. Anjelose, former MP, said two small-scale coir factory owners had committed suicide. He asked for immediate government intervention to solve the problems in the sector.
