The Union government has set apart Rs.3,000 crore in the budget for various minority welfare programmes, Anto Antony, MP, has said.
He was inaugurating a coaching centre for minority students at Thaikkavu Government Higher Secondary School here on Friday.
Inaugurating the function, K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA, said the Department of Minority Welfare had set up the coaching centre in an effort to address the backwardness of the minority sections of society.
The MLA said a scholarship scheme for meritorious students belonging to the minority sections would soon be launched in the State.
Presiding over the function, A. Sureshkumar, municipal chairman, said the Muslim community had not received due priority in terms of employment and education.
Youhanon Mar Chrysostum, Bishop of Pathanamthitta diocese of the Malankara Catholic Church, and Hafis Mujibi Rahman Maulavi of Pathanamthitta Juma Masjid delivered the benedictory speech.
H. Salimraj, Additional District Magistrate; Stella Thomas, Elanthoor block panchayat president; Annapoornadevi, Koipram block panchayat president; and K. Prathapan, Pandalam panchayat president, spoke.
