Kozhikode: The Kalpetta Bamboo Cluster is being launched on Friday for developing the bamboo and reed sector in Wayanad under a scheme of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission.

Under the Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, financial support will be provided for bamboo development activities, from cultivation to marketing of products.

Financial help will be available for technology and management training to members of the cluster and organising fairs for sale of bamboo and reed products.

Uravu, an NGO engaged in bamboo-based activities for almost a decade, is the implementing agency for the cluster programme.

An industrial cluster is a conglomeration of small scale enterprises of a particular region that face the same challenges and opportunities.

The Kalpetta cluster will bring under an umbrella about 350 persons in Wayanad who are working in self-help groups that are engaged in manufacturing handicraft products made of bamboo and reed.

Tribal people and women will also be among its beneficiaries.
