: Twelve inmates of the District Jail who had suffered injuries in a clash with other inmates on Sunday were shifted to the Central Prison here on Monday.

The jail officials here said a group of prisoners and Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers arrested in connection with the recent incidents of violence clashed during lunch time on Sunday allegedly over their meal plates.

Hunger strike

The remanded CPI (M) workers allegedly attacked the prisoners. The victims of the attack along with other prisoners went on a hunger strike demanding that the CPI(M) workers be shifted from the District Jail.

Northern Range Deputy Inspector General (Prison) Shivadas. K..Thypparambil said 75 prisoners from the Central Prison and nearly 70 inmates of the Special Sub-Jail were shifted to the district jail recently. This includes nearly 40 CPI(M) workers who got involved in a scuffle with the prisoners.
