Activists of the Nitta Gelatin India Limited Action Council and the workers of the company clashed at Kathikudam on Thursday. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Twelve activists of the action council were taken into custody. They were released later. According to the Action Council, three of their activists suffered injuries in the lathicharge.

The tension started when the company workers allegedly tried to repair a broken pipe that discharged waste from the company. A march was organised at Kathikudam to protest against the lathicharge. A hartal has been called at Kadukutty on Friday. The NGIL produces ossein and limed ossein, intermediaries in gelatine manufacture. The Nitta Gelatin India Limited Action Council alleges that waste from the NGIL is polluting the Chalakudy river and causing health problems.
