KOLLAM: Fish workers in the Catholic community residing in the coastal areas of Tangasseri and Vady celebrate Christmas by taking out their family members to sea.
This is also a tradition where elders introduce the younger generation to the sea. After attending the Christmas mass and meal on Christmas day, the fishermen take their families in their fishing crafts for the sail. Praying and singing, they sail together in a fleet. Snacks are also carried but some families enjoy their Christmas lunch at sea before returning. The sea is relatively calm during December-January. The family members get to know the hardships their men endure each day while setting out to sea to make a living. The experience gives us reason to wait for their safe return, says Mable who returned with family after the Christmas day sail.
Beach North Division Councillor Basil Lal said prior to the arrival of outboard engines, members of the fishing community at Vady and Tangasseri enjoyed Christmas by engaging themselves in various sea-based entertainment activities with their fishing vessels. The most interesting was the rowing competition. There is hardly any rowing now with the coming of the engines, he says.
