A 48-year-old man who is the second accused in an embezzlement case involving an amount of nearly Rs. 56 lakh and 20 sovereign of gold ornaments surrendered at the Kaduthuruthy police station in Vaikom on Monday. According to the police, Raju, an auto driver hailing from Kunnampurathu house at Valachira, and his wife Asha (42), the prime accused, are accused of running an unauthorised chit fund. Asha was a helper at an anganwadi in Kuruppanthara. At least 20 women in the locality had filed a complaint accusing the couple of fleeing with their savings that were deposited during the previous four years.

The police said that the couple had maintained cordial relations with their neighbours and this had ensured the goodwill that led to the flourish in their illegal business. — Staff Reporter
