The district administration is taking steps to revive the Centrally-sponsored Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) in the district.

The programme approved in 2009 had failed to take off in the district. All that was done under the scheme here was to grant funds to shelter homes for children.

ICPS aims at integrating various child welfare programmes to ensure that children falling through the gaps of earlier schemes are also protected. A District Child Protection Committee had been envisaged as the fundamental unit for implementing the scheme.

The society, however, was formed only recently following an order asking for the body to be created before the 15th of this month. The first meeting of the society will be held at the district panchayat on Monday, said G. Ramesh, District Social Welfare Officer.

He has also been designated as the District Child Protection Officer under the scheme.
