Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has lauded the functioning of the Plantation Corporation of Kerala Ltd. (PCK) which according to him was a great source of inspiration for those who advocated the expansion of the public sector in the country.
Speaking on the occasion of the valedictory function of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Corporation, the Chief Minister stressed that better working relationship existed among the workers, the officers and the management of the Corporation which had produced results taking the institution to greater heights.
In spite of the fact that the State was still an agriculture economy, the performance in the primary sector had received major setbacks. This was evident in the area of paddy and coconut. However, plantation industry, especially rubber has been a globally acclaimed success story for the State.
The Rubber Board as a commodity board and PCK as an industry unit, have played a crucial role in the achievement, he said.
Agriculture Minister K. P. Mohanan in his presidential address, said that in spite of the successes, the PCK had to bear the brunt of the endosulfan incident. However, the institution had not only acknowledged the mistakes, but had taken corrective measures so that such an incident would not be repeated. The Corporation was indebted to its workers for the success in its functioning and the management has decided to reward them with a comprehensive housing scheme, he said.
The scheme would be formulated by March this year so that it could be implemented from next financial year, he said.
Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan released the Vision 2017 document, the perspective plan for the future course of action for the Corporation. Former Agriculture Ministers P. P. Thankachan and Cyriac John were extended felicitations on the occasion.
