As many as 60 boats to participate in races

ALAPPUZHA: The 54th Nehru Trophy Boat Race would be held at Punnamada lake here on August 12, Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran and office-bearers of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race Society (NTBRS), which organises the race have said.

Balakrishnan, T.M. Thomas Isaac, G. Sudhakaran, K.P. Rajendran and N.K Premachandran would participate in the inaugural meeting. Mr. Sudhakaran

said as many as 16 snake boats would participate in the main competition. The winners of competition in snake boat category would get the prestigious Nehru trophy.

As many as 60 boats would participate in contests in various categories. The categories in which competitions would be held include Veppu A grade and B grade, Iruttukuthi A grade and B grade and Churulan categories. Competitions would also be held in women's category and students' category. The State Government, the NTBRS and private sponsors have announced cash prizes for the winners.

Cash prizes

The State Government would give a cash prize of Rs.2 lakhs to the winners in snake boat category, the office-bearers have said. The runner-up in the category would get Rs.1.5 lakh. The winners of third and fourth position would be given Rs.1 lakh and Rs.50,000 respectively. The NTBRS would give Rs.75, 000 each to all snake boats that reach the final in snake boat category. All the snake boats that take part in the race would be given another Rs.25,000 each as maintenance grant.

In addition, the Outlook magazine would provide Rs.1lakh to the winners in the snake boat category, the organisers said. The runner-up in the category would get Rs.50,000 from the magazine group. The winners of third and fourth place would get cash prizes of Rs.25,000 and Rs.10,000 respectively. The Government has also announced cash prizes to winners in other categories also.

Arrangements for tourists

The organisers said the construction of pavilion for spectators had been completed. Special arrangements have been made for both domestic and foreign
