Check dams will be constructed on various water bodies in the district for conservation of water, District Panchayat President K.V. Dasan has said.
Addressing a district-level seminar on water conservation organised jointly by various departments and local bodies here on Wednesday he said the dams would be constructed in co-operation with the gram panchayats.
“Assistance of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and the Central Government’s Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) scheme will be sought for the project. We need to sensitise people on the judicial use of water, energy and food items. Students and Kudumbasree Mission workers could be used for creating awareness in society,” he said.
The water conservation programme has been planned under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme with cooperation of various departments such as the education, social welfare, irrigation, water authority, ground water, agriculture, soil conservation, village development and panchayat. A water budget would be prepared with the co-operation of various grama panchayats, said the district panchayat president. Various projects to be undertaken include renovation of canals , rain water harvesting, checking wastage of water and watershed management. Thalikkulam Block Pachayat President K.
