KOLLAM: The R. Shankar Charitable Society will be inaugurated by Left Democratic Front convener Vaikom Viswan at a function here on April 30.

Society chairman Mohan Shankar, who is R. Shankar’s son, said the society was being formed to commemorate the late R. Shankar in his birth centenary year which begins on April 30.

One of the prime aims of the society is to provide quality education.

Mr. Mohan Shankar recalled that R. Shankar had made valuable contributions for the educational progress of the socially backward sections of society.

The society has taken the decision to build a fitting memorial for him in the form of educational institutions.

The first in this connection will be the Shankar Institute of Science Technology and Management.

The foundation stone plaque for the institute will be unveiled by SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan at the inaugural function of the society.

Mayor N. Padmalochanan will launch the website of the society and the former minister E.T. Mohammed Basheer will launch the website of the institute.

Mr. Mohan Shankar said the society expected to inaugurate the institute in April 2009.

Other projects

The society also plans to start medical and para-medical colleges, a self-contained village complex for senior citizens, a children’s home and a publications concern.
