Change of guard is in the offing at the Kottayam Municipal Council. Unlike earlier times, the changeover would be smoother this time, it is believed.

As per an earlier agreement within the Congress and the ruling UDF dispensation, the present municipal chairman Sunny Kalloor was to step down after a tenure of two years for his party colleague and fellow ward member M. P. Santhosh Kumar. After another two-year term, Mr. Kumar would step down for another party colleague for a one- year term. Since the first two years have been completed, Mr. Kalloor is expected to stand down to pave way for his colleague. Mr. Kalloor said he has informed the DCC chief Kurian Joy of his willingness to follow party decision. The meeting of the Congress leaders and members in the Municipal council, scheduled for Friday afternoon will take the formal decision in this regard, Mr. Kalloor said. , Mayakkutty John, municipal vice chairperson and KC(M) representative, has put in her papers after completing her two-year term to pave the way for another UDF candidate.
