Kozhikode: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy visited the banks of the Kallayi river on Monday to investigate reports that encroachment was rampant on its banks.

Speaking to presspersons after visiting Pathar on the banks, Mr. Chandy said he was convinced of the encroachments and would take up the issue with Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Kozhikode District Collector P.B. Salim.

Mr. Chandy said that encroachments upon government land had become a problem all over Kerala, and said the environmental damage from the illegal activity made it imperative for the government to act against them.

The Kallayi Puzha Samrakshana Samithi, which has been in the forefront of agitations against the encroachment, said here that the Kasaba Village Officer had intervened to prevent the construction of a shed on encroached land at Pathar on Sunday night. Samithi secretary Faisal Pallikandi said that Mr. Chandy had invited them for consultations and promised support in their efforts to drive out encroachers.
