Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Friday that consumers are taken for a ride in the marketplace owing to their lack of awareness of rights.

In his inaugural address at the 27{+t}{+h}meeting of the Central Consumer Protection Council (CCPC) here, Mr. Chandy said adulteration, short weight measures, lack of safety and quality in appliances and equipment, unfair business practices, unreasonable pricing, misleading advertisements, etc. are some areas where consumers get cheated. The situation is getting better, with consumers making use of redressal forums to resolve their grievances, he said.

The Chief Minister said the State enjoyed a vibrant consumer awareness atmosphere, especially in the rural, panchayat and remote areas. Kerala has also developed a systematic and direct approach to educate people at village, seashore and at grassroot levels, he said.
