Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will lay the foundation stone for a housing complex for the Scheduled Caste families in the district on June 1.

The project to purchase land and rehabilitate homeless Scheduled Caste families below the poverty line was included under the Kerala Development Scheme 2006-07.

For this, a three-acre plot was purchased at Marakkarkandi here at a total expense of Rs.44.80 lakh. The municipality decided to construct houses in seven blocks for as many as 56 families here, which includes 32 families run by women.

A total sum of Rs.4 crore was estimated for the project that combined the EMS Housing Scheme and People’s Planning Programme, said C. Sameer, municipal chairperson in-charge at a press meet here on Thursday.

The construction would be undertaken by Kerala Police Housing Construction Corporation. Each unit of the housing complex would be of 30 sq m and as many as 38 families had already registered for the project, Mr. Sameer said.

The inaugural function to be held at the Chandrashekharan memorial hall at Marakkarkandi will be presided over by A.P. Abdullakkutty, MLA. K. Sudhakaran, MP, and K.M. Shaji, MLA, will be the chief guests.
