KOCHI: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said on Wednesday that the formation of a Higher Education Council would lead to concentration of power in the office of the Education Minister.

Talking after inaugurating the leadership meeting of the Ernakulam DECK, Mr. Chandy said university vice-chancellors were being denied the prospect of functioning independently under the LDF Government's rule. He said the attitude of the LDF Government towards the Vice-Chancellor of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, was a case in point.

The Opposition leader accused the CPI(M) of trying to pressurise those who were unwilling to yield power to them. The attack against the M.G. University Vice-Chancellor was an example, Mr. Chandy alleged.

He said the CPI(M) was denying local self-governing institutions a chance to function independently. DCC vice-president K.P. Haridas presided. K. Babu, MLA; KPCC general secretaries Benny Behanan and Ajay Tharayil; K. Mohammedali, Ludy Luis, the former DCC president K.P. Dhanapalan; DCC office-bearers N.M.Yousef, Jamal Manakkadan, Abdul Muthalib, V.P. George; KSU district president Hybi Eden; participated.
