Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday inaugurated Leader’s Square at Mala in memory of K. Karunakaran.

A 400 kg six-foot bronze statue of Karunakaran has been installed in the Square. The State government had granted 2.5 cents land and Rs.20 lakhs for setting up the Square.

Close ties

The Chief Minister recalled that Karunakaran had deep ties with Mala. From the Mala constituency, he was elected to the State Assembly seven times consecutively.

“He loved Mala. The people of Mala reciprocated his affection. Other politicians looked at Karunakaran’s political and administrative skills with wonder,” he said.

Biggest memorial

KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said that Karunakaran’s development initiatives were the biggest memorial for him.

Karunakaran’s daughter and KPCC general secretary Padmaja Venugopal said that her family had always enjoyed the affection of the people of Mala.

Sculptor felicitated

T.N. Prathapan, MLA, presided over the function. K.P. Dhanapalan, MP, Guruvayur Devaswom chairman T.V. Chandramohan, District Panchayat president K.V. Dasan and DCC president O. Abdurahman Kutty were present.

Suresh Davinci, who sculpted the statue, was felicitated on the occasion.
