12,000 electricity consumers to benefit in the region
In what could benefit at least 12,000 electricity consumers in the regions of Vakathanam, Panachikkad, Kurichy, Madappally and Puthuppally, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy commissioned the 33 kV Substation at Vakathanam, near Changanassery, on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chandy said that the substation would ensure uninterrupted power supply and prevent voltage fluctuations henceforth for the local residents. He added that the initiative was part of the set of developmental activities envisaged by the Electricity Department.
Power Minister Aryadan Mohammed, presiding over the function, pointed out that the energy sector of the State was in the midst of a crisis. Elaborating on the problem, he said that while the State had produced 110 lakh units of power on March 6, it had a total consumption of 598 lakh units on the same day. While 250 lakh units of power were being purchased from the Central government, the remaining electricity that was required is being purchased from other sources at high rates. This has been the situation for a long time, he said. Adding that there remained several obstacles in raising the production of hydroelectricity, Mr. Mohammed called for joint efforts in tapping the potential of small-scale and traditional sources of energy.
According to Mr. Mohammed, the regions including Vakathanam was provided with electricity from the substations at Changanassery, Pampady and Kottayam through 11 kV lines. By commissioning the new 33 kV substation, there would be 15 per cent increase in voltage and a marked fall in loss during transmission of electricity.
Furthermore, 11 kV feeders have been established at Njaliakuzhy, Ponganthanam, Pathamuttom and Pallikadavu regions for transmission from the 33 kV substation at Vakathanam.
KSEB member B. Babu Prasad, district panchayat president Radha V. Nair, Madappally block panchayat president V.J. Laly and Vakathanam grama panchayat president Laisamma George also participated in the function.
Earlier in the day, the Power Minister inaugurated an electrical section office at Pathanadu near here. A total of 8,026 consumers of areas including Vellavoor, Koyippuram, Kadayanikkad, Koodathinkal of the Vellavoor grama panchayat and certain parts of Kangazha grama panchayat come under the limits of the section office.
N. Jayaraj, MLA, presided over the function. Vazhoor block panchayat president Elsamma Saji, Kangazha grama panchayat president Chandralekha Mohan, and district panchayat members T.K. Suresh and Usha Vijayan also spoke among others.
