‘Drop move to split Palakkad division’

Alleges neglect of State by Railways

Criticises ‘haste’ shown by Union Minister of State

Kozhikode: The Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) will launch an agitation if the move to create the proposed Salem railway division by dividing the Palakkad Railway Division is not stopped.

The executive committee of the Chamber which met here on Monday decided to lend its support to the public agitation that may arise in the event of MPs from Kerala failing to protect the interests of the State.

The meeting said the Chamber would not hesitate to organise a series of agitations with a view to putting an end to the ‘step-motherly’ attitude of Railways to the State.

The meeting urged those concerned to move ahead with the steps to set up the Salem division only after talks between the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, taking into account the larger interests of both States and after keeping the promises given by the Prime Minister and the Union Railway Minister.

The Chamber said the ‘haste’ shown by Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu in ‘bypassing’ the Prime Minister and the Railway Minister was ‘a challenge’ to the authority of the Prime Minister and the Railway Minister and the State of Kerala.

Chamber president N.E. Balakrishna Marar presided over the meeting.
