Rs.3.06 crore sanctioned

KOZHIKODE: Nadukandi Aboobacker, convener of the Madrasa Modernisation Programme Action Council, Kozhikode, said here on Friday that Education Minister M.A. Baby had informed the council that a total of Rs.3.06 crore grants sanctioned by the Union government for providing tuitions in science, mathematics, English and social studies in madrasas would be distributed soon.

Minister’s promise

The Minister gave the assurance to members of the council who met him with a petition seeking disbursal of the Central grants. Following this, the council, which was formed in protest against the non-disbursal of the grants, decided to defer its agitation, Mr. Aboobacker said.

The grants for madrasas for the years 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09, was received by the State government last February but was not distributed till now. A total of 425 madrasas would now be given Rs.72,000 each as grant.

The council petitioned the Chief Minister, Education Minister, Leader of the Opposition, former Minister P.K. Kunhalikutty, CPI (M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala.

The members who met the leaders include council patron Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal, Abdurahman Randathani, MLA, and chairman P.K. Muhammed Haji, besides Mr. Aboobacker.
