Aim is to provide a safe, friendly environment for senior citizens

KOLLAM: District Collector B. Sreenivas will inaugurate a Prevention of Elder Abuse Cell (PEACE) here on Thursday. The inauguration coincides with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. PEACE is organising a special programme to observe the day.

PEACE secretary Praveen G. Pai said here on Wednesday that the cell was being formed to fight crimes, abuse and neglect of older people. The aim was to provide a safe and friendly environment for elder citizens to live in. The awareness day was being organised in association with the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, a body recognised by the U.N.

At the inaugural function, the former chairman of the State Human Rights Commission S. Balaraman will deliver the keynote address. S.S. Firoze, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Special Branch, Crime Investigation Department, Kollam, will present a paper on "Prevalence of crime against elders.'' PEACE president M.B. Pillai will preside over the function.
