The year-long diamond jubilee celebrations of the launch of the Indo-Norwegian Project (INP), which brought about mechanisation of the fishing sector here, will be inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K.V. Thomas.
At a press conference here on Friday, organising committee working chairman Charlie Joseph and publicity convener Marshal Frank said the mechanisation process had brought about considerable economic progress to the fishing community of Shakthikulangara-Neendakara belt. The jubilee is being observed to remember and honour the people who had dedicated themselves for the successful implementation of the INP in the face of several hurdles during 1953.
The mechanisation process saw the overall economic growth of the belt and also helped the area progress educationally and socially.
Neythil Vincent, former president of the Kollam District Boat Operators Association, said the year-long celebrations would comprise various seminars of the fisheries sector, honouring senior members of the fishing community, introducing latest fishing methods to the fishermen, a beach fest in December, and release of a jubilee souvenir.
Mr. Frank said one of the important plans during the jubilee year would be programmes to educate the fishermen on fuel efficiency.
The jubilee inaugural function will be presided over by the Labour Minister Shibu Baby John. Fisheries Minister K. Babu will be the chief guest and N. Peethambara Kurup MP will deliver the keynote address.
