DGP reviews probe in attack case

: Police officers investigating the assault case on T.J. Joseph, Professor at Newman College, Thodupuzha, on Thursday seized a compact disc (CD) containing images of torture and executions done by the Taliban along with other incriminating documents from one of the suspects.

The CD was recovered from a Toyota Innova owned by Kunjumon of Aluva. The vehicle was confiscated from his residence on Thursday, after the investigators received information that one group involved in the assault had travelled by this vehicle. No one has been taken into custody in this connection.

Director-General of Police Jacob Punnoose told The Hindu that the evidence points to extensive preparations being made ahead of the assault. “We are taking this development very seriously,” he said.

Mr. Punnoose had visited the scene of the crime in Muvattupuzha and reviewed the progress of investigation on Wednesday night. Following the seizure of the CD, the top officials in the district met to take stock of the situation.

The police conducted searches for suspects in different parts of rural district on Thursday. Investigators said the group had made efforts to cover the track.

Passenger details

The authorities at the Cochin International Airport have passed on details of nearly 22,000 passengers who had gone abroad from here since the attack on Sunday last.

The details, sought by the police, included names, passport numbers and other particulars available at the emigration counter.

The police had recovered some documents from the house of Manzoor, a Popular Front office-bearer, which recorded the new developments in the State police force and information on some police officers, on Wednesday.

In a related development, the City Police took one youth into custody from the hospital where Prof. Joseph is undergoing treatment. The police said Anish Mohammed, 23, an engineering student from Guruvayur, had sought an audience with the Professor.

He told the police that he wanted the Professor to pardon the two who had been arrested in connection with the assault.

The police suspect the youth to be emotionally unstable.

The police are verifying his antecedents to check whether he is associated with any organisation.
