Says project details not available to the public

KOTTAYAM: The controversy over the proposed flyover project, being pushed as a lasting solution to the increasing road congestion in the town, has taken a new turn with Catholicos Baselius Mathoma Didymus I, the supreme head of the Malanakara Orthodox Syrian Church headquartered here, coming down on the project, which according to him was “ill conceived, without proper studies or interaction with the public”.

In a press note issued here, the Catholicos said the details of the alignment of the proposed flyover and its sketch were not available to the public even today. The proposed flyover would come up over the Indira Gandhi Grounds, Municipal Park, the residential areas in the town, the MD Commercial Centre, the Diocesan Centre of the Orthodox Church and its chapel the MD Seminary Higher Secondary School, the Vidyadhiraja School, NSS Karayogam Building and other residential areas. The proposed flyover, which stretches up to Erayil Kadavu will affect the future growth of the little township which has an area of 3.5 sq km. , he said.

The Pontiff put forward half-a-dozen alternate schemes, which are either in various stages of development or remained stalled on account of governmental apathy.

He said the need of the hour was to have a detailed study of the issue after taking into account the environmental issues involved and the concerns of the educational and religious institutions likely to be affected by it.
