Thiruvananthapuram: The police have registered a case in connection with the death of a mentally challenged man who was under treatment at the Medical College Hospital reportedly for injuries sustained during an assault with a cricket bat.

Mohanan, 48, a resident of Baiju Mandiram, Panthadivila, Cheruvakkal in Sreekariyam police station limits, was allegedly assaulted with a cricket bat by Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers two weeks ago after he refused to stick posters. His relatives did not pay attention though Mohanan vomited several times. On Monday, the relatives rushed him to the General Hospital following severe pain. He was shifted to the Medical College Hospital on Wednesday as his condition deteriorated.

He passed away while undergoing treatment later in the day.

Activists of the United Democratic Front alleged that the LDF workers assaulted Mohanan.

According to Sreekariyam police, no injuries were seen during the physical examination carried out on the deceased's body during the inquest. The police have registered a case for unnatural death. No complaints have been received, police said.
