A comprehensive cancer control and awareness programme will be launched in the Mattannur municipality in association with voluntary organisations.

Ward-level committees for launching the campaign in the municipality will be held from Thursday to Saturday. Volunteers trained by the Malabar Cancer Care Society will explain the details of the campaign after the committees are formed. Ten active volunteers will be selected from each of the 31 wards in the municipality. As many as 156 additional volunteers selected from educational institutions will be involved in the campaign. The volunteers will visit households as part of the drive to control cancer incidence in the municipality.

Municipal chairperson Seena Ismail said selected volunteers would be given training on September 1. The training would be followed by the inauguration of the cancer control programme. Those with suspected cancer symptoms would be examined at five centres in the municipality.
