KOCHI: A day before the colleges close for the Onam holidays, the student community here is all set to celebrate the festival in style. On Friday, thousands of students on Kochi campuses will join hands to wish peace and prosperity for the entire State.
Hectic preparations are on for a tough battle to take home all the top honours in the competitions being held in connection with the celebrations. Anoop, a degree student of Maharaja’s College, said that ‘pookalams’ would be a major highlight of the Onam celebrations on the campus.
“We are trying our best to get a special design for the ‘pookalam.’ There is huge excitement on the campus, as students want to make the occasion truly memorable,” he said. Students have planned elaborate programmes for the Onam celebrations. Majority of the students have decided to wear the traditional ‘mundu’ and ‘kasavu saree’ on Friday.
Lakshmi, a student of the Chartered Accountancy programme, said that it was one of the few occasions when students get an opportunity to dress up in the traditional style.
“We have also plans to prepare ‘payasam’ as part of the festival. The festival committee has already given the orders for a sumptuous Onasadya,” she said.
But the real excitement will start only post-lunch with students participating in a ‘tug-of-war’ event.
