Nearly 100 persons, predominantly women and children, took out a demonstration in Kottayam and expressed solidarity with the ‘One Billion Rising’ global campaign for women’s rights that was held on Thursday.

The demonstration that was held in front of the District Collectorate was led by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Kalathipady and there was participation from other organisations and students of colleges.

The representatives of the groups also submitted a memorandum to the District Collector Mini Antony calling for measures to ensure safety for women. In their memorandum, the organisations called for stringent punishment for those found guilty of committing atrocities against women.

During the discussions, Ms. Antony assured all possible steps in improving the security system. She also said that assistance of the women’s organisations will be employed for all future campaigns relating to creating awareness regarding women empowerment in society.
