‘Land available at Kanjikode'

The Institution of Engineers India (IEI) and the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) in a joint statement on Sunday urged the government to establish the promised Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the district.

The statement by C.K. Haridas, founder-chairman of the IETE Palakkad Centre,C. Pradip, honorary secretary, and Vincent A. Alapat, Chairman, IEI, said “an IIT was promised for Palakkad because of the neglect of the district in the field of higher education. There is enough land available at Kanjikode, the industrial hub of the district for it”.

“The District Collector had given a proposal for a small airport in Palakkad town. The much-awaited rail coach factory is expected to start work soon. Though there are six engineering colleges in the district, nearly 5,000 students from Palakkad are going to Coimbatore for professional education. So if an IIT was set up here, it will be a boon for the people in the district,” it said.

The IIT would make Palakkad a major consultancy hub for Malabar area and also to the nearby Coimbatore and Thrissur districts, it said.
