on smoking

A workshop on enforcement of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003, organised by the Tobacco Free Kerala ,a coalition of like-minded organisations such as Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum and Malabar Cancer Centre, Kannur, which concluded here recently, stressed the need for intensifying tobacco control drives. The sensitisation programme was aimed at exposing police officials not just on COTPA but also on the harmful effects of tobacco use; physical, psychological, financial and social issues. Faculty member N. Subhash Babu, a former police official, explained various sections of the COTPA and the punitive measures prescribed for violation of each. Video documentaries of tobacco victims sharing their hardships were also exhibited. K. K.
