Kerala Dalit Federation (KDF) president P. Ramabhadran has said there is nothing wrong in religion providing a proper and meaningful direction to politics.

Since politics was inclusive of culture, arts and religion, there was no harm in religion interfering in politics; politics would not be complete without religion, he said while inaugurating a State convention of Kerala Dalit Yuva Jana Federation (KDYF) here on Saturday. He said politics would lose its sanctity and purity only when its practitioners eyed politics as a lucrative career.

The Dalit leader said caste and religion had been used for electoral gains by even communist parties since the elections in 1957.

Mr Ramabhadran appealed to his followers to be on their guard against attempts being made by some parties to field “Independents” in the coming elections covering up their true political colours to mislead the voters and win their votes.

All Dalit organisations should try to build up political awareness among their groups so that they would vote for the right candidates, he said. KDYF president C.P. Manikandan also spoke.
