Scheduled Caste-Scheduled Tribe Commission chairman P.N. Vijayakumar has said that various enactments for the protection of the SC/ST communities are often deprived of their powers by certain attitude of the bureaucracy.

Inaugurating a legal awareness seminar organised by the commission here on Friday, Mr. Vijayakumar said there was no dearth of rules for the protection of the SC/ST communities. However, those rules were often blunted as a result of the attitude of the bureaucracy, he said.

As enactments were borne out of social unrests, they had their inherent strength, Mr. Vijayakumar said. The legal awareness campaign among members of the SC/ST communities in local bodies and promoters was under way.

A grievance redressal adalat would be held from 10.30 a.m. on March 2.
