MALAPPURAM: The Calicut International Airport at Karipur will function round-the-clock from Monday, allowing air traffic throughout the day and night. Announcing this on Saturday, Airport Director R. Veeraswamy said this would be made possible with the available staff.
Currently, the airport functions from 5.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m., giving no chance for flight services at night.
The decision of the airport management to allow round-the-clock operations has come in the wake of heavy clogging of flight traffic in the last three days owing to bad weather.
Flight operations were badly affected on Thursday, especially when no takeoff or landing could be possible in the afternoon. Hundreds of passengers and their kin had been put to hardship, as several flights were diverted to other airports.
Mr. Ramaswamy admitted that the congestion owing to the ongoing construction of terminal buildings had been causing difficulties for the passengers. He appealed to the passengers to cooperate with the authorities in carrying out the work.
The work would be completed by August this year, he added.
