The LDF has retained the Thodiyur division of the Kollam district panchayat in the by-election on Tuesday.

LDF candidate Sreelekha Venugopal of the CPI was declared elected on Wednesday by a margin of 7,576 votes over her nearest UDF rival B. Sethulakshmi of the Congress. Election was warranted to the division following the death of sitting member K.P. Venugopal. Ms. Sreelekha is Venugopal’s wife. As many as 39,198 votes were polled and there were five candidates in the fray. The UDF had a rebel with Y. Abdul Samad of the IUML contesting and he polled 1,388 votes. BJP candidate Sujit Sreekumaran polled 3,638 votes and PDP candidate Thazhava Jabbar polled 2,362 votes. The district panchayat is ruled by the LDF.

In the by-election to the woman reservation Perungalam ward of the Munrothuruthu grama panchayat, UDF candidate Usha Shylock of the Congress was declared elected. Polling 251 votes, she defeated her nearest LDF rival M. Pushpamma of the CPI(M) by a margin of 78 votes. Independent candidate Shyla Henry polled 101 votes. A total of 525 votes were cast.

In the by-election to the Pankonam ward of Thrikovilvattam, LDF candidate Sasidharan Pillai of the CPI(M) was declared elected by a margin of 565 votes over his nearest UDF candidate Ushakumari of the RSP(B).
