KANNUR: Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has called on the authorities to take action against ‘middlemen' exploiting consumers buying sand for construction.

INTUC State general secretary K. Surendran said at a press conference here on Saturday that the cooperative society mining sand from the Valapattanam river at Poithumkadavu was selling sand at Rs.1,200 per unit (100 square feet). But the middlemen who transported the sand for construction purposes were selling it at Rs.5,000 per unit. He said the INTUC wanted to expose the middlemen and urged the consumers to buy sand directly from the society. The exploitation by middlemen could be ended if the consumers approached the society with relevant documents, he said.

To a question on the INTUC's stand on the ongoing agitation by residents against the toddy shop at South Bazar here, Mr. Surendran said though the union supported toddy tappers demanding protection of their job, it was against any use of violence against the residents. He said he condemned the attack on the agitators on Thursday.
